Loop Of Pain Sunny skies and a temperature of 67 degrees greeted the Yellow Train as they left the depot at 5:35pm. As the pack crossed over I-35 and onto the battlefield, The Boss suggested that maybe they should just take it easy and keep the pace around 12mph or so. As laughter erupted all around, Thrasher snorted, put his head down and pounced.
The bike computers were humming as the pace revved higher and higher. 22, 23, 24, 25mph and it continued to rise. 27mph now as the Yellow Trained screamed down Corinth Parkway with Thrasher stoking the fire. The pain began to leak into the legs and lungs and we all knew the feeling wouldn’t subside for the next hour.
Scooter led the peloton into Cielo Ranch and kept the pace high. Through the ranch they snaked with Dice, Wrench and Scooter taking turns pounding their chests on the front. Towards the Col de Shady Shores they pedaled.
Thrasher went to the front of the group at the bottom and started to climb like a homesick angel. The group stuck to his wheel as they headed directly into the teeth of a blustery north wind. Halfway to the summit and Flyboy pulled down his goggles, cranked the propeller and took off shredding the peloton to pieces. Flyboy had a nice gap and looked like a sure bet to be the first over the top. Dice had other ideas, however, and sneered at Flyboy as he went by him.
Around the loop they continued trying to catch their breaths. Deep in Dinosaur Forest The Boss rises up and fires a shot over the peloton’s bow. They are flying towards T-Rex Hill and Scottie is digging trying to splinter the group. They race up T-Rex Hill at 25mph and The Wrench has popped. Dice comes up snake eyes and is also spit off the back. Flyboy is holding as are Scooter and Thrasher. The Boss pulls off and urges the group to ride. Scooter moves to the front and leads the breakaway of four towards the Col. They motor up the climb and dig down Garza Lane. They turn left onto Lakeshore Road and amazingly The Wrench has rejoined the group.
Scooter has given it his all but can no longer hold the pace as he shrugs his shoulders and pulls to the side. The Yellow Train continues to steam as Thrasher sets the pace up Cowpattie Hill. The group of four arrives onto Corinth Parkway and know there is only two miles to glory.
Thrasher and Flyboy sneak off the front and gap The Wrench and The Boss by 50 yards. One mile to the finish and they turn west into a 12 mph headwind. Thrasher is still on the front but Flyboy comes around him 800 meters from the finish and Thrasher sits on. The Boss closes down the gap and settles onto the wheel of Flyboy with Thrasher behind him and The Wrench lurking. 200 meters to go and Flyboy steps on the gas and starts to bob like a cork on a catfish line. 100 meters to the finish and The Boss pulls off the wheel and Thrasher comes through. The money line is in sight and the three grumpy old men are digging. They race towards the line and Flyboy actually gets in his drops as time stands still and hell freezes over. Flyboy lunges for the line and takes the hard fought victory holding off Thrasher and The Wrench. Another fantastic finish.
Make your plans now to ride with the group on Tuesday, October 30th at 5:30pm as the Corinth Cycling Crit Championship will be decided.

You just get better and better. When darkness arrives early here in a couple of weeks you'll have to start writing up the Saturday rides to keep your writer's edge.

If I rode with you guys on a mountain bike I would never see the front. The recap would read "We took off from the parking lot and I never saw anyone again. The End."

I sincerly hope there will be still more riding in the night lights. See you all for the final ride.
