Big Steamer - Thursday April 10th - Da Kaiser Dishes
SAG WAGON NEWS CORINTH-A big group braved the strong west winds in the search of Big Steamer points on Thursday night. The peloton rolled out of the depot shortly after 5:45 heading East towards Shady Shores. After crossing over I-35 and into the House of Pain, the pace quickened to 21mph as the crosswinds buffeted the peloton. As the Yellow Trained turned onto Shady Shores road, the Boss went to the front and lifted the pace to 24mph as the boys flew across Dead Men's Slough. After turning into Ceilo Ranch, Thrasher hit the front and kept the train chugging. The group stayed together through the ranch and the Boss was back on the front as they pedaled north down Garza lane. Halfway to Cowpattie Hill and Ricky Bobby attacked the group. He attacked hard and quickly had a 50 yard gap. Da Kaiser was the first to react and quickly closed the gap on top of Cowpattie. After a sweeping right hand turn onto Lakeshore road, the paced eased in Dinosour Forest. It was time for the trip up the Col de Shady Shores and since the climb was directly into a 18mph Westerly wind, position was at a premium. With no one willing to work, the pace was steady but not hard up the climb. Across the top, Dallas Biker attacked and quickly had a nice gap. Riders were slow to react, but he was eventually brought back into the fold. The final time over the Col saw Paper Boy out in front leading the group. Despite recovering from the flu, Paper Boy was riding strong and fighting the wind. He led the group over the top and traded pulls with Boss and Dallas Biker down Shady Shores road. Thrasher, who had been hammering at the front for much of the ride, punctured on Brown Terrace road eliminating him from possible BS points. Jacque the Ripper stopped to watch Thrasher fix the flat and almost took out half the peloton in the process. The group continued on looking for glory. The pack arrived on Corinth Parkway minus Thrasher, The Ripper and Stewie who is still working his way back from his winter training plan which involved sitting on the couch and watching television. Dallas Biker attacked the group again and had a gap of about 40 yards. The pace was now at 26mph and DB was holding steady. As the road turned back to the west and into the wind, the peloton began to pull Dallas Biker back and he was soon deposited into the group. Big Rick went straight to the front and drove into the teeth of the wind. Halfway to the finish line, he stopped pedaling and looked back for help. None was coming. The defending champion was left to do the work himself. 400 yards to the line and Ricky Bobby almost took out himself and a few others as he rubbed Scooters rear wheel. Ricky Bobby was able to keep his bike upright and continue towards the finish. 100 yards to the line and Da Kaiser jumps out of the pack and gaps the group. Big Rick responds and tries to grab the Big German's wheel. The Boss reacts and hits the gas 20 yards before the line. Da Kaiser is too strong on this night and wins by five yards. The Boss gets second and Big Rick finishes third. Well I was feeling pretty good last night :D till I rounded the corner at Brown Terrace and my back tire started to washout on me. I yelled FLAT held up my arm and eased off to try and make the rest of the corner. Made it! Scary there for a minute. Got it change out in good time and Jack and I were back to the road. Wish we could have been there at the end, but sometimes it's just not to be. Was a great ride, but the big question in everyone's mind was "Where was the Cannibal?" :D
