Big Steamer May 29th - Groupetto Night In The Peleton
Sag Wagon News - CORINTH-The Italian term 'groupetto' refers to a group of riders that have decided to take it easy during the race as the rest of the field continues off the front. There were no riders off the front, but the peleton was in a laid back mood on Thursday night as the pace was steady but not fast. The Cannibal spent plenty of time on the front as per the norm. Dewey Decimal led 3/4 of the way up the Col the first time before giving way to The Cannibal to clean up the leftovers. Not counting the stop sign atttack by Sir Roy, the only other action of the night came towards the end of the ride when The Boss jumped off the front down Lakeshore Road looking for some television time. Unfortunately the Thursday night race was not televised so it was a rather small audience for his sponsors. The peleton hit Corinth Parkway and finally the group began to ride. The jockeying for position began in earnest as everyone was looking to get on the right wheel. With about 1/2 mile to the line, Team Tortoise lit it up as the duo gapped the field. Paper Boy kept his focus though and snuck up the right side and sunk the turtles. It was a terrific lead out as he took Cannibal, The Torrent, Big Steamer, DangitDake and The Boss with him. The speed was 29mph at this point and the finishing line was now in sight. Just 1/4 mile left to go and Dangitdake jumps off the left side. He is all over his machine but Der Kaiser comes out of nowhere and it's on. Der Kaiser blazes a trail to the finish line as Dangitdake fizzled like a wet firecracker on the 4th of July. The Torrent finishes a strong second and The Cannibal holds off the Boss for third.
