Big Steamer May 27th - The Boss Puts It On The Board Sag Wagon News
CORINTH -After a storm straight out
of the movie “Something Wicked This
Way Comes” moved through Corinth
earlier in the day, the Big Steamer Tuesday
night ride was in question. By the time
5:45pm rolled around, the sun was out
and the temperature was a
perfect 72 degrees. 17 or so
cyclists toed the start line in what
turned out to be the fas-*test*-('") ride
of the season thus far.
Perhaps still smarting from the holiday
weekend, the riders took it easy the
first few miles and leisurely pedaled
down Corinth Parkway at 19mph.
Things finally began to get heated as
the group twisted and turned through
Cielo Ranch with speeds hovering
between 22 - 24 mph. The peleton
rolled down Garza Lane headed
towards Cowpattie Hill with Deuce,
Mexican Professor, Cannibal and
Stearns all trading turns on the front at 26mph.
The first time over the Col it was
gruppo compatto as the steady pace
served to prevent anyone from taking
a flier off the front. Around Brown Terrace
road Big Steamer throttled through
Dinosaur Forest and up T-Rex Hill. They
hit the bottom of the Col and Stearns
gives it a go off the front and Deuce and
Hollywood respond to the pace. Halfway
up the climb The Boss jumps past Stearns
off the front but the group is not in the
mood to let anyone get away and he
drifts back into the pack. Over the top
there are 11 riders left in contention.
Around the loop of pain and Big Steamer
again shows himself at the front as he
leads the group over Cowpattie Hill.
The Mexican Professor takes over from
there and drills it down Garza Lane.
Around Garza curve, Stearns, The
Cannibal and Deuce up the ante again
and the speed is now 29mph as they
blitz up Trashcan Rise and down Shady Shores
road. They turn south and speed across
Dead Man’s Slough. Big Steamer and
Stearns try to get away across Beaver Point
but again the answer is no. Things are
quickly shaping up for another sprint finish.
The group turns right
(which for the first time includes The Professor)
onto Corinth Parkway and the peleton is
extremely twitchy now. With just under two
miles to the finish, Deuce and Stearns attack
and gap the field. They have a 10 second
lead as the bunch gases down the road at 33mph.
The duo is holding their lead as they
continue to work together to try and hold
off the thundering herd. Just under 3/4 mile
left and their dream is over as The Mexican
Professor and Cannibal pull the breakaway
back. Almost as soon as the breakway is
brought back, Big Steamer hits the gas
taking Hollywood and The Boss with him.
200 meters to the glory line and the speed
is still in excess of 30mph. Big Steamer
ups the pace again and Hollywood
yells “cut” and lets BS go. The Boss goes
around Hollywood and has to work hard to
get on Big Steamers wheel. 50 meters to
the finish and The Boss jumps and is able
to hold on for the hard fought victory. Steamer
continues his impressive streak and takes
second while Hollywood holds on for third.
Things are really beginning to bunch up in
the Big Steamer Series standings.
CORINTH - 71 degrees - mostly sunny
Winds from the SE at 8 mph
Avg speed 23.7 mph

Good point: last night's hammerfest and this a.m.'s Franciscofest clocked me. I slept for 90 minutes this afternoon. . . .
The Tuesday/Thursdays are kinda funny from a back-of-the pack perspective: one is hanging on and, until the final section of the ride, w/in 30 yards or so of the front. But that's a HUGE thirty yards. . . .

I agree with Sean. "Easy" was not the first word that popped into my mind.
