Big Steamer May 22nd - Der Kaiser Blitzkrieg
SAG WAGON NEWS CORINTH -The winds were angry my friends, but 15 or so riders turned out for the Big Steamer ride on Thursday evening. After some leisurely pedaling to I-35, the pressure was immediately applied down Corinth Parkway as the bunch drilled into the 25mph headwind. They turned north onto Shady Shores, steamed across Beaver Point and Dead Man’s Slough at 28mph. (I must admit to you dear reader that my Garmin Edge 305 had not been charged so I really have no idea how fast we were traveling). The peloton turned into Cielo Ranch and the pillow fighting got hot and heavy as riders at the front sped up and slowed down shadow boxing one another. It was all in vain however, as they emerged from the ranch as one onto Shady Shores road. As they turned north onto Garza road and headed towards Cowpattie Hill, Chi-tizzle and Hollywood turned the first pedals in anger as they gassed it up and over the top. As the pack swung into the Dinosaur Forest, it immediately came to a screeching halt. A tow truck has been called in to haul off two junk cars and the trailer is blocking the course. After a brief slowdown, they hit the Col de Shady Shores and Der Kasier and Mean Green rocket up the climb. Der Kaiser is the first over the top and takes the imaginary King of the Mountain point he thought was available. Over the top, the pace slows as they head through the temporary tow-away zone a second time. Over the Col the final time and they enter the loop of pain. It was a rather friendly loop of pain on this night though as the pack stayed together all the way to the bottom of Cowpattie Hill. At the bottom of the climb, Chi-tizzle attacked and had a gap over the top. The Chi-tizzle attack quickly fizzled however, as the headwind continued to roar and keep the peloton together. They round the sweeping turn onto Shady Shores road and The Boss attacks up Trashcan Rise. He is given some leash and pushes out to a 10 second gap with no one following. He goes through the righthander towards Dead Man’s Slough and gets hit in the mouth with a dose of reality known as the south wind. The peleton gobbled The Boss up in Dead Man’s Slough, spit him out the back and pushed him into the lake. The group arrives on Corinth Parkway with two miles to the finish and everyone begins to get twitchy. Riders are starting to get ejected off the back as the pace increases and the pack turns west and into a crosswind. With ½ mile to the finish, Der Kaiser stands up and yells “Ich bin schnell” which translates to “I am fast” in English. Only half of the remaining field is able to respond to the attack. The finish line is in sight now and the crowd is urging the Steamers on. There are some Norwegians in the tifosi tonight who turned out expecting to see their hero Thor Hushvold at the finish. Unfortunately, The God of Thunder is busy training for the Tour de France and was unable to attend the Thursday night Big Steamer. Undaunted, the crazy fans are waving their flags and urging the riders on. The media coverage and fan flag waving does not slow down Der Kaiser though. As he approaches the money line, he reaches into his jersey pocket and throws some strudel into the sky as he crosses the finish line. The Cannibal rolls across in second and Big Steamer holds on for third. Another great night of racing CCC style.
