Big Steamer May 20th - Big Steamer On Fire
SAG WAGON NEWS CORINTH – The heat was on in more ways than one on the Tuesday night Big Steamer ride. The temperature was a warm 91 degrees as the Boys of Summer took off from the Corinth Cycling depot. With three GS Tenzing members taking part in the ride, team tactics were definitely on display. As the peloton crossed over I-35 and onto The Killing Fields, the Cannibal went straight to the front and drilled it down Corinth Parkway letting everyone know that he was feeling a little “deprived”. The bunch rumbled down Shady Shores road and crossed Dead Man’s Slough at a relatively easy 25mph. They snaked through Cielo Ranch and emerged back onto Shady Shores road Grupo Compatto. Der Kaiser was on the front and led the group over Trashcan Hill with The Boss on his wheel and a train of 20 or so in tow. As the pace eased up front, CW rolled off the pack and revved the pace up to 26mph as the peloton made quick work of Cowpattie Hill. They made the sweeping right hand turn onto Brown Terrace and motored through Dinosaur Forest. Up the Col de Shady Shores they climbed at a steady 22mph and most of the group was still together over the top. As they headed through Dinosaur Forest for the second time, CW gassed it up T-Rex hill and stretched the elastic as he led the pack towards the bottom of the Col at 28mph. Up the climb they went with Der Kaiser on the front continually upping the pace towards the top. In a nice show of sportsmanship, CW gives a saddle push to Sir Roy halfway up the Col, turning his grimace to a smile. Over the top and the pace eases ever so slightly as they head towards the final loop. The bunch turns left off Brown Terrace road onto Garza Lane. Big Steamer takes over at the front and leads up Cowpattie Hill and all the way to Trashcan Rise. As he pulls off the front, CW attacks and The Boss goes with him. They quickly get a nice gap on the field and wonder if the group will let them go since GS Tenzing and the CCC are both represented in the break. The answer would be no. They are reeled in like a fisherman with a catfish on his line and again it is Grupo Compatto as they blitz across Dead Man’s Slough at 30mph. Just before the turn for home onto Corinth Parkway, CW again attacks the glass-cranking peloton. His gap is quickly 50 meters and continuing to grow as they bore into the headwind. Der Kaiser and Ask Sherwin Williams are not going to chase down their teammate, so the responsibility is left to the rest of the bunch to bring CW back. With 1½ miles to the finish, they curve towards the west and pickup a slight tailwind. The peloton is riding now like a pack of wild dogs trying to bridge the gap. ¾ of a mile to the finish and The Great Dane moves to the front with the Boss on his wheel. As CW is brought back into the fold, Big Steamer jumps and takes Sherwin, DC, Der Kaiser, and The Cannibal with him. They fly down the stretch, past the cheering fans drag racing to the finish. Big Steamer has the bit between his teeth and holds on for the victory, nipping the State Champ and The Cannibal holds on for 3rd. Big Steamer has now won two of the last three BS rides and is quickly moving up the leader board as he tries to defend the jersey. if you haven't done it, you should. My son was playing baseball last night at Corinth Fields, i decided to take a break and take my daughter and watch the finish. Before i knew it Sean and Ted were at the finish also, with their own families. Watching the pack come steaming down the parkway is very cool. i was able to snap a couple of pics. Really fun to watch. it's over very quickly, so show up around 6;45 or so across from city hall.

A request of the Corinth Parkway Tifosi/Peanut Gallery: NO HECKLING! Some of us have very fragile egos. Seriously, it was cool to see a large group hanging out and watching the CCC mayhem. Though I do have an irrational fear that the Local Po-Po will figure all of this out soon. I mean, we do finish directly in front of the Corinth City Hall. Scottie: No sir, Mr. Policeman we weren't racing. We were all just trying to get away from that scary man on the Titanium LeMond.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Slammin Sammy is planning on opening a concession stand at the finish line?

And for folks who stick around until 7:30 or so, there's a SPECIAL BONUS: you can see ME finish! Did you flat? Just kidding. But that's ok. I chased down the four rider breakaway (from the back of the pack) right before we took a right on Dobbs. I put in some serious effort and was doing around 36 mph to bridge the gap (they were doing maybe 27). They sat up, looked at me and then like a dumb@ss, I braked slightly to fall in behind them when I should have just kept going. The rest of the group bridged right before the turn onto Dobbs and I found myself popped off the back with only a mile and a half to go. Tactical errors aside, I had a blast... :D ~James (PelotonRacer2)
