Big Steamer May 1st - Ricky Bobby Shakes & Bakes Sag Wagon News
CORINTH -With the beast that is Mt. Scott looming on the weekend horizon, the question was how hard and how fast the peloton would ride on Thursday night. The Yellow Train was also dealing with a sustained south wind of 20 mph which was sure to keep the bunch together.
The group of 14 or so riders left the depot shortly after 5:45 and easily pedaled the four mile warm-up before getting down to business. The combatants crossed over I-35 into the Killing Fields and Paper Boy went to the front boring into the unrelenting headwind. The group turned onto Shady Shores road and descended down into Dead Man’s Slough at 30mph. The bunch stayed together through Cielo Ranch and headed down Shady Shores road.
As they crested Cowpattie Hill, The Boss, Hollywood and Big Steamer were on the front as the first pedals were turned in anger. They flew through Brown Terrace turn and Dinosaur Forest as Mean Green took a turn at the front. Up the Col de Shady Shores the first time and Dang it Dake, Hollywood and Big Steamer led over the top.
There is a rumor going through the peloton that a complaint has been filed against Hollywood because his new white shoes are so bright they are blinding the riders behind him in the paceline. Sag Wagon News is currently investigating several leads on this story and hopes to have an update soon.
They circle through Dinosaur Forest again and hit the Col for the final time. Halfway up the mountain and The Boss decides to give it a go as he puts in the first attack of the night. Hollywood goes with him and sits on the wheel. They have a nice gap on the group but The Boss refuses to work into the headwind over the top and they sit-up.
“I just wanted to get my name in the paper and my sponsor a mention”, The Boss told Sag Wagon News. “In these tough economic times, the more coverage I can get for my sponsor, the better off we all are”. As they headed down Garza Lane, the bunch had been whittled down to nine.
They headed into the loop of pain and prepared to ride the next three miles directly into the 20 mph headwind. As they grinded towards Cowpattie Hill, the peloton started looking for shelter from the wind like Dorothy’s parents in the Wizard of Oz. Dang it Dake wasn’t frightened by the gusts though and stayed on the front for quite a while. Just before they turned towards Trashcan Hill, Flyboy noticed a slow leak on his rear tire and had to ground his plane. His night was finished. Those are the chances you take at the 5,000 mile mark on a set of tires.
Gentle Ben turned the boys toward home and powered across the lake. As they approached Beaver Point, Thrasher took a turn on the front and upped the pace. They turned right onto Dobbs and Dang it Dake attacked. The boys were having none of it though as Big Steamer, Hollywood and The Boss chased him down. DID continued to stay on the front as they turned right on Corinth Parkway. The speed now was at 31mph and less than 10 riders were left to con-*test*-('") the finish.
One mile to the finish and Dang it Dake gives it another go. The cross wind is playing havoc with the group and riders are wearing the mask of pain as the finish draws near. With ½ mile left to the money line, Ricky Bobby says “Hey, it’s me America” and stomps on his pedals as he attacks with everything he has. He has a gap and the bunch is slow to react. Finally Dang it Dake goes and Hollywood follows with Big Steamer lurking. 300 yards to the line and Ricky Bobby looks like a dying quail as he tries to hold on for the win. Dang it Dake is out of gas as Hollywood, Big Steamer and The Boss ride by him. The line is tantalizing close and Ricky Bobby hits it first for the victory and three big BS points. The Boss closes the gap on Hollywood and then Big Steamer and rolls across in second place with Big Steamer taking third.
Remember that next week the Big Steamer will be in recovery mode as we slow down the pace and take it easy. Come out and join in the fun.

Great read Scottie as always. Being a tremendous Will Ferrell fan and having seen Taladega Nights several times your captions to the movie have me smiling in laughter as I read.
I really like the interview portion...clever of The Boss!
Thanks for the pain everyone dished me tonight as I struggled and struggled to maintain eye sight, but was not happening. :(
