Big Steamer June 24th - CW Calls His Shot & Speed Record SAG WAGON NEWS
CORINTH-A group of 30 cyclists toed the start line for the Big Steamer ride on Tuesday evening at Crownover depot. Once the peloton crossed over I-35 and into the Killing Fields, Stearns steadied the pace at 22mph as the train pedaled into the south breeze. They turned left onto Dobbs and CW revved it up to 26 mph, quickly letting everyone know he was feeling happy.
There was a small break through Cielo Ranch that contained Ask Sherwin and The Cannibal, but it was reeled back in by Stearns and others. Crossing out of Cielo Ranch the pace ramped up as the bunch flew up Trashcan Hill and turned east towards Cowpattie Hill with Hollywood, Mexican Professor, Sherwin and others taking quick pulls on the front. As they rounded Brown Terrace turn, Dangitdake took the lead into Dinosaur Forest all the way to the foot of the Col de Shady Shores. The Boss decides to break things up a little and gases it up the climb as the speed moves out to 25mph. Sherwin and Stearns are quickly on his wheel and Stearns keeps the pressure on over the top.
They make the loop once more and hit the bottom of the Col for the final time. However, this time the elastic has snapped and half the field is missing. 14 or so riders are still in contention for the win and they crest the top of the climb altogether. Over the top, Mexican Professor opens up the throttle on Garza Lane (his favorite road) with The Boss on his wheel and the pack bunched in behind. MP asks for some help but there is none coming from The Boss so Deuce moves up and does some work. Things calm down a tad as they snake through Lakeshore Road and finally move onto Garza Lane for the final time.
As they head south down Garza into a slight headwind, Mexican Professor and Whitewalls get off the front forcing the bunch to get fidgety. CW is having none of it though and brings them back into the fold. They fly through Garza bend and up Trashcan Hill at 27mph and finally turn right onto Shady Shores heading for home. Deuce tries to sneak off the front in Dead Man’s Slough but his request is denied and he drifts back into the pack. There are conflicting media reports, but Sag Wagon News has confirmed that at about this point, CW tells Noah that he is going to attack.
And attack he did on Dobbs road. As Christian rode away from the group, the peloton reacted like a 13 year old stumbling across his first nude scene in an R rated move. They just watched in awe unable or unwilling to react. CW quickly had a 15 second gap as he onto Corinth Parkway with two miles to the finish. The peleton pedaled for home and were now trying to close the gap but there was no organized chase. Whitewalls was leading the charge down the Parkway at 31mph and the gap was shrinking but much to slowly. CW was clearly going to hold on for the win and the bonus points.
With 1000 meters to the finish, Big Steamer saw a hole develop in the pack and darted through it. The cat was among the pigeons now and the speed was 33mph. As they roar towards the money line, riders are disappearing off the back quicker than a church parking lot after services on a Sunday morning during football season.
Deuce hammers past the Big Steamer and takes second and BS holds on for third and the very important Big Steamer point. A new Big Steamer speed record is set as well as the average speed for the race was a smooth 24mph.
CORINTH - 95 degrees - mostly sunny
Winds from the SE at 13 mph

The pace was just too much for me tonight... ;-)
I hung myself at around 13 miles. I guess this mornings ride was a no-no..
My step son was nice enough to drag me along for awhile but he was noticeably stronger than me this evening.... even with his puny 750 training miles for the year..hehehe.
I need to start training with more intensity again instead of climbing 30,000 feet per month.. <laughs>
Hills? What hills? There aren't any *REAL* climbs on the Big Steamer!
Thanks for the @ss whoopin tonight fellas! :-P
See you next tuesday. :)

Great write up Scottie! And great ride Christian... thank you for coming out with the novices and whooping our butts and getting us in shape. We really are getting faster and faster and that is great! I'll be out of Big Steamer for a couple weeks given that I'm racing this Sunday and will take some days off after that. I'm in great shape thanks to all of these BS rides, and I'm feeling very confident that I'll be able to cruise through that 56 mile ride at a very decent pace. I'll be looking forward to ride with you guys again on the 4th of July ride. I hope it's an easy ride!
Oh, and by the way, Garza Lane is definitely my favorite road. My mother's family name is... Garza. So some day... sooome day, maybe my late grandpa Garza will give me a push from up in heaven and let me execute a clean breakaway.

About half way through the thing, I was pretty sure we couldn't get the pace high enough to set a new avg spd record.
Noah was having a tough day, and I make no secret that I'm trying to help him along the way. In the closing miles I asked him how he wanted to play it out. He said that he didn't have any more attacks or bridges in him. So we figured I'd lob an attack and get the group to chase me, giving him a free ride to the line.
Francisco and others had made the ride really hard in the ~12-14mile point, so I think there was some hesitation when I went. My intent was to incite a chase. I looked back, saw that Noah was tucked in, so I just kept on going. After the stop sign before the soccer fields, though, I saw that the gap was still pretty healthy. "Do I sit up or do I try to TT it in?"
Well, this is a super nice group of folks to ride with, but I don't think anyone on the Big Steamer ride is going to give me one, so I'm not giving any away, either. <grin>
Good job to all, as that was a faster ride with a bit more breeze to slow things down.
Noah heads out for Nationals around August 1, and I think we'll make the BS ride one or two more times between now and then. Keep it up folks! This is a gem of a ride, and I appreciate how friendly everyone is, especially to Noah.
