Big Steamer June 19th - DID Delivers Fastest Ride Of Season
SAG WAGON NEWS CORINTH-After the nullified Big Steamer on Tuesday, the peloton was chomping at the bit for some points on Thursday evening. The conditions were perfect for racing with a light easterly breeze and a temperature in the lower 90’s. The peloton of 20 or so pulled out of the Ronny Crownover depot around 5:50pm. The group took it relatively easy for the first few miles of the ride all the way into Cielo Ranch. Once inside the ranch, Stewie jumped off the front and Ask Sherwin Williams went with him. The duo had a small gap but The Boss chased them down and everyone was back together. The pack headed west down Shady Shores road and the pace got hot and heavy as they crested Cowpattie Hill and flew towards Brown Terrace at 31mph. They cruised through Dinosaur forest without issue and hit the bottom of the Col de Shady Shores gruppo compatto. Halfway up the climb and Christian Williams (CW) gassed it off the front. CW was practically begging for someone to join him off the front but no one took the bait to go with him. Around the loop a second time and they hit the bottom of the Col again, but this time some riders are missing in action off the back. Over the top, White Walls and Sherwin ride off the front. The Boss likes the look of things and jumps around the group and gets on their wheel. Big Steamer joins the three escapes and they soon realize the peloton is letting them ride. They start taking turns as they fly up Trashcan Hill and the gap moves out to 10 seconds. The move has caused some panic in the bunch as the chasing peleton is more strung out than Nick Nolte in Las Vegas. The gap moves out to 15 seconds or so as they turn north on Lakeshores road. At this point the Mexican Professor bridges up to the breakaway urging them on. The breakaway is in a spot of bother though as they try to work together with their tongues dragging the pavement. MP decides to try it on his own and leaves the group. For the remaining four it’s all over except for the crying and the peleton gobbles up the escapees in Dinosaur forest with only MP left out front. Over Cowpattie Hill for the final time, CW and Dang it Dake are stamping on their pedals as they pull MP back into the fold. The group is now back together with 10 left to con-*test*-('") the win. They turn right onto Dobbs Lane with about three miles to the finish. MP inadvertently makes a sudden move in the bunch and The Boss is forced to do some cross country riding as he goes down into the ditch but is able to keep the bike upright as he pulls back onto the road. Jacque the Ripper is there to give him a big push and The Boss is able to bridge back onto the back of the pack. Onto Corinth Parkway they turn with two miles to go. The speed is at 28mph now as everyone begins to try and find just the right wheel to sit on. Gentle Ben ups the tempo as they turn west with just over a mile to the finish and the pace is now over 30mph. 500 meters left and Dang it Dake makes his move and gives it everything he has. DC moves to the outside and goes with him. Big Steamer and The Boss go as well on the outside and there are four left to slug it out. Dang it Dake is all over his machine but he is holding on to a five meter lead over the three chasers. DC, BS and Boss are riding hard but the line is coming much to fast and they are not going to catch Dake. Dang it Dake streaks across the finish for his first win of the season with DC taking second and Big Steamer again holding off the Boss for third. The average speed of just shy of 24mph is the fas-*test*-('") so far of the season. Is DID on track to break the thirty-minute mark at the next HCTT? Looks like it from here!

Hey Scottie... I had no idea a sudden move of mine forced you into a ditch! I'm so incredibly sorry! I don't remember any sudden move other than my unsuccesful attempt to formalize an escape together with Noah, Rudy, Big Steamer and you. I really don't know when this happened, but please accept my apology. What a week! Two people sent by me into a ditch... this is not good. Mark, I apologize to you again as well. Oh... and by the way... I told you Jamie had been hiding in the pack. He will definitely go under 30 minutes on the next TT. I wish he would've been in the escape attempt yesterday. Something tells me he would've made it work. Maybe next time!

MP - It happened as we were going down Dobbs Road headed for Corinth Parkway. Perhaps someone moved in front of you which caused you to react. Anyway...at least I didn't go flying over my bars. No harm, no foul.

Francisco- 06-20-2008

Thank God nothing happened to you! I'm really, really sorry. Especially for not having even noticed. Sorry again!

Christian- 06-20-2008

We're gonna get this thing over 24mph soon. The cyclocross interval was just one of those things. We were moving up pretty quick, Francisco was just pulling off. Add a little fatigue by everyone. Good save, and even better job getting back in there. Is there a special class or something I can attend to learn this route once and for all?! I'm embarassed that I don't have it down yet.

Hey Christian....forget it....I've been riding with them for over a year and still havent learned all of them...right Scottie? :D

DallasBikr- 06-20-2008

I'll settle for learning one! Just when I can finally get close to hanging onto this thing every now and then, I read: "We're gonna get this thing over 24mph soon. " Uh-oh. May have to upgrade the bike or downgrade the descending muscle... :)

Francisco- 06-20-2008

Hey Christian, how about you and Jamie come with me next time on the break away... in exchange I offer to teach you the course! I know Jamie can go over 24... I can't but he can, he did it twice last week by himself! So let's pull together and make it go even faster!

dangitdake- 06-21-2008

I can go over 24 mph if I'm in the areo bars the whole time or if I have someone pull me, like Christian did on Thursday. Thanks for the wheel and the pain at the end. It also might help if my back wheel was true.
