Big Steamer July 1st - Der Kaiser Ist Schnell
SAG WAGON NEWS CORINTH-With the July 4th holiday looming, the peloton seemed to be in a gentile mood on Tuesday evening as the ride was attack free and the pace moderate. There was a nice south breeze blowing as the group of 25 or so departed from the Crownover depot. Hollywood paced the bunch down Corinth Parkway and Dobbs Lane with The Cannibal joining in on the fun through Dead Man’s Slough. As Cannibal rumbled through Cielo Ranch, he got to experience the now famous Muhammad Ali quote “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” first hand as a honey producing, dagger carrying insect buried its weapon into the flesh of the Cannibal. He was waving his hands like a homecoming queen on a parade float, and was finally able to eradicate the bee from his cockpit. The peloton crossed onto Shady Shores road and cruised up trashcan hill at 23mph and upped the pace to 25mph towards Cowpattie Hill. At the bottom of the Col de Shady Shores, Whitewalls punctured and his night was over. The pace up the Col was 25mph and one or two riders were ejected off the back but it was still a large bunch over the top. It remained gruppo compatto for the next six miles as the pace fluctuated between 22 – 25 mph with no one trying to get away. Hollywood and The Cannibal did take a flyer off the front just past Garza curve and up Trashcan Hill but the bunch stuck to them like white on rice. The pace gradually increased down Dobbs Lane as the Big Steamer wannabes started to turn the pedals in anger. As they turned onto Corinth Parkway, the pace was an easy 25 mph for 500 or so meters as only a couple of folks were willing to do any work. Things changed quickly when the pack reached the ball fields as The Torrent kicked it into high gear and took off. Even though Torrent was ineligible for the win (he had to join the ride late) Deuce gassed it and closed the gap. The remaining peloton was content to watch the action but the pace was 31mph now and continuing to rise. With about ½ mile to glory, Der Kaiser notices an opening in the middle of the peleton and treats Corinth Parkway like his only personal autobahn. The German bully flies past Torrent and Deuce as he stomps towards the line. Duece puts the bit between his teeth trying to get on terms. Just behind them a group of six or seven are battling to close down the gap. The speed is now at 33mph as the line rounds into view. They scream through the finish line with Der Kaiser taking the win, Duece holds on for second and The Cannibal takes third. Sag Wagon News caught up with The Cannibal after the race to get some of his thoughts. “I used Hollywood and Dangitdake like a condom” the flesh eating string bean told this wide-eyed reporter. “I used them as long as I could and then just threw them in the trash”.
