Big Steamer July 17th - Cannibalism SAG WAGON NEWS
CORINTH-A temperature of 99 degrees greeted the 25 riders at the Ronny Crownover depot on Thursday evening for the Big Steamer ride. The large peloton kept a steady pace as they drove into the moderate southeast wind down Corinth Parkway and west down Dobbs Lane. The Mexican Professor jumped onto the front down Shady Shores road and the pace was 27mph through Dead Man’s Slough.
As they exited Cielo Ranch, the BP boys were on the front as Stearns and Grizzly set the pace up Shady Shores road. As they approached Garza curve, a loud hissing sound filtered through the group as Stearns had punctured. His chance for points was finished. As the bunch closed to within ½ mile of Cowpattie Hill, Big Steamer attacked. The Boss was not going to chase his teammate down so he pulled off the front and forced I’m Lovin’ It and others to close down the break. Although the attack didn’t stick, it did serve to blow up the peloton as only 13 riders remained in contention once they crested Cowpattie.
Disaster struck the Big Steamer as they went up the Col de Shady Shores the first time when he popped a spoke on his rear wheel. His night was finished. The China Man led the bunch over the top and kept the pace high towards Cowpattie Hill. Stearns rejoined the group at this point and the remaining riders crested the Col for the final time.
For the next six miles it was status quo as various riders took pulls on the front but there were no attacks. Tornado Tom stirred things up on Trashcan Hill as he got out front and throttled the pace up to 30mph. Stearns led the bunch down Dead Man’s Slough at a steady clip of 26mph and Grizzly took over up Beaver Bluff.
They turned onto Corinth Parkway and picked up a slight tailwind. Tornado Tom sat on the front for about ½ mile holding the pace at 25mph with The Boss sitting on his wheel. With one mile to the finish Stearns stuck his nose out front to provide a lead-out for his teammate Grizzly. Several riders jumped onto the train and the speed was 30 mph. As they approached the line, a group of six were free which included Cannibal. Tornado Tom, Rose Pedaler, Scroogs, Grizzly and Scooter.
With less than 100 meters to the finish line The Cannibal used his Cottage of Wattage and shot off the front. Scooter dug deep and tried to hold the wheel of the meat eater up the finishing rise but just couldn’t do it. The Cannibal took the victory and the big three points that goes with it. Scooter held on for second and Grizzly rounded out the top three.
Thanks to the large group of spectators that came out to cheer us on at the finish line. Remember next week is Big Steamer recovery week. The next Big Steamer points ride will be Tuesday, July 29th at 6:00pm.

Kevin,
when are you going to ride the big steamer next?
DallasBikr- 07-18-2008
Sometime after the honey-dos, youth camp and bike event promoting duties are over, and I have enough legs to still be with the pack on Corinth Parkway
So...2011. June.

A coupla points:
1. I must echo DBikr: "Cottage of Wattage" is one for the ages. Yup, that's where the Cannibal lives (near the "Cave of Pain," to use another Bossism, right?)!
2. Hanging out at the finish line isn't as much fun as riding, but it sure is a lot of fun. If the BS doesn't fit into your schedule, inclinations, or abilities (I plead the first and third items, personally), c'mon out. It's a blast.
3. I was really psyched by see mio fratello Cannibal eat up the competition, but what REALLY flipped my switch about this race was Scooter grabbing second place. As the callow youths of the club (i.e., anyone under, say, 45) might not realize, there's a lot of Old-Guy Pride goin' on here. Jimmy and I were talking a week ago about how cool it was that Thrasher and Scooter were able to hang with the group until the homestretch, ride after ride. Now Scooter digs deep and tears off a second-place finish. I THINK (Scottie?) this is the first time this year that a 50+ rider has finished in the top three. In any case, THREE CHEERS FOR SCOOTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea I believe that is right. Scooter is a super strong rider and I remember last year he got faster towards the end of summer which seems to be repeating this year.
I should also mention the 14-year old wunder kid Tyler Chidester,,,aka Rose Pedaler. If you look at the photo above you will see him sitting on Tornado Tom's wheel in 6th place. I believe that was his first time to hit the finish line with the group. The kid has a lot of potential.
Quite a diverse group of riders when you have a 50+ year old sprinting it out with a 14 year old. Noah, Rose Pedaler and Little Scottie would make quite the team

I've ridden BS and off road with Tyler and his dad. The kid has seriously good legs--and a really good 'tude to do with it. One of my favorite BS rides had me working with Tyler, Mike, and Jimmy. The cross-generational thing was beyond cool.
So, Tyler, are you going to race the fall XC season?
Dan- 07-18-2008
With the Denton crit races coming in a week - it would be great to see the young trio compete. I'd find some time to come to cheer them on and anybody else thats going to race. Noah certainly knows his way around these races. Between now and then it would be great to give the other two some advice on how to race. They definitely have the heart and legs - with a little knowledge they could be front runners.
