Big Steamer August 7th - Steamin Big Steamer SAG WAGON NEWS
CORINTH-Another big group turned out for the Thursday evening Big Steamer. The pace was nice and easy as the group crossed over I-35 and onto the Killing Fields. The speed crept up to 22mph as Thrasher sat out front and led the bunch down Corinth Parkway.
The pack rolled steadily down Beaver Point and across Dead Man’s Slough at 25mph with various Steamers taking turns on the front. The pack turned into Cielo Ranch and watched Scooter attack off the front. It was photo night on the Big Steamer ride and Scooter was dead set on taking advantage of every opportunity to get his mug in every shot. Big 12 shot off the front and starting chasing Scooter. The Cannibal just couldn’t stand to see anyone else riding out front and felt the need to devour the potential breakaway. The Cannibal is a marked rider and Big Steamer made sure the Cannibal was going nowhere. As the group exited Cielo Ranch the peloton was back together.
The Cannibal remained on the front as he drove the group over Trashcan Hill and towards Cowpattie Hill. The Boss came to the front over Cowpattie and the group rounded Brown Terrace at 27mph. Tornado Tom and Cannibal pulled to the bottom of the first climb up the Col de Shady Shores. The Boss jumped off the front ¼ of the way to the top and increased the speed to 27mph hoping to split the group up. Towards the top he jumped again and seven or eight riders said no mas as they rounded the corner and headed for Cowpattie once more.
The final time up the Col saw Big Steamer setting the pace all the way up the climb. He led over the top and around Garza curve and reved up the pace up Trashcan Hill as held onto a slight five second gap. The Boss closed down the gap on Shady Shores road and Little Scottie and New Guy took turns on the front as the bunch sped past Lake Lewisville.
The Cannibal was back on the front down Garza mashing on his pedals as he powered the combatants down Garza at a steady 25mph. The pack flew past Big 12 along the way as his night was done in by a untimely puncture. Tornado Tom took over up Trashcan Hill and the speed was 29mph for the next mile. The bunch reached Dobbs Lane and there were still plenty of riders left in contention. The pack included the likes of Tornado Tom, Scooter, Big Steamer, Paper Boy, The Cannibal, DC, Thrasher, DC, The Wrench, Little Scottie, Rose Pedaler, Schid, The Boss, Retro, New Guy, The Shield and maybe another rider or two that I have forgotten.
Halfway down Dobbs Lane and Little Scottie tries to spoil the party by attacking off the front. You have to admire the kid for giving it a go but Big Steamer was in charge of babysitting duties and grounded Little Scottie and would not let him go out to play. Little Scottie tried again on Corinth Parkway but Big Steamer just pedaled past him and sneered.
The bunch rolls past the softball fields without much organization until The Wrench gets on the front and begins to turn the screw as he increases the pace to 27mph. The Boss was sitting on his wheel with the Shield sitting on the inside. With about 500 meters to the finish and The Boss rises up and gives it a go. His face is a picture of pain as he is praying for the line to come quickly. 100 meters to go and The Boss has a gap and the speed is now 33mph and holding. Just 10 meters to glory and The Boss feels the heat of the Big Steamer on his inside as they dive for the money. Luckily it was photo night and the paparazzi was on hand to capture the finish and the finish line photo clearly shows that the Big Steamer has nipped The Boss for the win. Upon receiving the news of his second place finish, the Boss punched a photographer and threatened to boycott the China Olympics because he is not willing to ride in dirty air. Oh yea, he also flatted on the way home and sheepishly had to be delivered in the Big Steamer’s wife’s Sagtaurus. Meanwhile, The Cannibal held on for 3rd and DC rolled across for a strong fourth place finish.
All kidding aside, I just want to say what a pleasure it is to watch Little Scottie and Tyler ride. They are just young teenagers but their talent is certainly evident. They are getting more and more comfortable riding in a group and both have lots of speed to burn.

Photos Ok guys, the photos are up on my Picasa page:

I was sitting in the middle of the road at Cielo Ranch waiting for you guys, and then just when you entered the stretch a car came behind me, so I stood up and moved to the side, though the car ended up waiting anyways. Bummer... :x
You guys are too fast! I didn't get a good position for the shaded tree covered stretch at the back of Shady Shores because I didn't make it in time!... :o
And unfortunately the finish line pictures contain more blur than I wanted... :(
I had fun taking the pics; it's really something to stand there and see the group fly by. I only had a few precious seconds to get the shots!
I'll try to get the files to Scottie before I leave.

Wow....great stuff Marty. I love the expression on Little Scottie's face as he gives it a go up Cowpattie Hill. The Cannibal holding the bottle in his teeth is a classic.

Wow, great write-up and great pictures.
We'll see how far I can make it next time. My chain came of so I got dropped, but I would probably have been dropped anyways after a while..... I was pretty impressed with how fast you guys all are.
I'll see you guys out there.

pictures If anyone wants me to send them files of pictures, send me an email - simachangbin@gmail.com - and tell me the picture number(s) (for example, pics 4, 12, and 43), or better yet, look at the picture info and tell me the picture file number (for example 335, 342). However, just to let you know, I will be traveling the next two weeks, so I may not get around to it until after then.
