Big Steamer August 5th - El Profesor Mexicano es Muy Rápido CORINTH-The dog days of summer are beginning to take their toll on the Big Steamer peloton as there was some tired legs in the bunch on Tuesday evening. Despite the temperature hovering around the 100 degree mark, a group of 20 or so toed the start line.
Big Steamer led the Yellow Train down Corinth Parkway before giving way to the Mexican Professor who took over all the way through Cielo Ranch with some help from Spin City. Things really began to get cranked up towards Trashcan Hill as the speed topped 28mph. MP was on a good night as he stayed on the front all the way over Cowpattie Hill. The pace was just shy of 30mph which was causing the elastic to stretch in the back of the group. The China Man, Tornado Tom and What About Bob moved to the front through Brown Terrace with Big Steamer and The Boss just behind.
The group hit the bottom of the Col de Shady Shores and was halfway up the climb when the Mexican Professor attacked. The bunch decided there was no reason to rush into hell and let the master marathoner go. Once the peloton had crested the climb, there were only 10 or so riders left in contention. MP continued to increase his lead and the second time over the Col the gap was 15 seconds and climbing. Big Steamer led the second time over the Col and pulled the group down Garza Lane trying to bring the escapee back into the fold. Big 12 jumped onto the front and was all over his large machine as he led the bunch at 26mph into the strong headwind. The gap was hovering at 20 seconds and it was beginning to look like it might stick.
Around the loop of pain, and the lollypop guild was now setting the pace. The Rose Pedaler and Little Scottie with the help of the China Man were all driving hard at the front. The chase bunch turned south on Garza Lane heading towards Cowpattie Hill and into a headwind. What about Bob put in a strong turn on the front and was looking for help but there was none coming . The Boss, Big Steamer and Tornado Tom were spent and just looking for wheels. China Man still had some gas left and took over on the front and was soon joined by Big 12 who has really been coming on of late. They drove hard but the gap was still 20 seconds to the Mexican Professor.
Down Dobbs Lane the speed was 26mph with What About Bob, I’m Loving It, Big Steamer, China Man, Tornado Tom and The Boss left chasing. China Man and What About Bob jumped off the front and quickly had a small gap. The bunch turned onto Corinth Parkway and soon realized that Mexican Professor was not coming back. He had picked a perfect night for an attack as the last 1 ½ miles to the finish was straight downwind and he took advantage as he held on for the win with a 15 second gap. China Man and What About Bob worked well together down Corinth Parkway as they stayed 50 meters out in front of the chasers who were not well organized. The China Man was able to take second and What About Bob rolled across in third about five seconds ahead of Tornado Tom and The Boss.

Great Job MP!! :D To stay away from that group is quite a accomplishment. I on the other hand was dropped on the last surge up Cow Pattie Hill. :x Oh Well, maybe next time 8)

Thanks Tim... seems like the interval/hill training is starting to pay off. Nevertheless it was painful... very painful. It turned out to be a 20 minute pull! Honestly, I never thought the break was going to stick, although by reading the recap it seems that the group got lazy and let me go. I need to add that I'm Lovin' it started the breakaway, I caught up and he helped me recover for a good half mile right before the second climb Cowpattie Hill. This was key to the succesful break. I must admit however, as Scottie correctly says, that the wind was also a huge factor. Once I hit Corinth Parkway there was no way someone would catch up with a 20mph tailwind. It would've been a completely different story with a headwind.
And now that I'm into this... the real secret (aka. legal doping) was the red curry with rice I had for lunch at Siam house. Maybe after this plug I'll get a sponsorship from them and a free lunch every Tuesday! Jokes apart, the best Thai food in Denton... if not Texas.
