Big Steamer August 14th - DC Discharge
SAG WAGON NEWS CORINTH-Incredibly it was another fatality free night on the Big Steamer ride. Nearly 25 riders felt the need for speed and toed the start line at Ronny Crownover. Somehow the peloton was split in the neutralized section of the course down Meadowview Lane. The leading group crossed over I-35 and decided to continue on as they opened up a two minute lead over the chasing bunch. Because of the split, it was an extremely fast pace in the chase bunch as speeds hovered around 26mph for five or six miles. The Cannibal and Big Steamer were doing plenty of work on the front. The pace down Garza Lane was 30mph as the large breakaway group began to be reeled back in. The catch was finally made in Dinosaur Forest and the group was all together. The coziness didn’t last long though as the Col de Shady Shores was up next and the group continued to pour on the gas. As they crested the climb, there were 15 or so riders still left in contention. The group was strung out over Cowpattie Hill all the way to the bottom of the Col for the final time. Stearns and White Walls dished out a few slices of pain pie up the Col and no one was asking for seconds. Big Steamer took control through Garza curve and set a pace of 30mph over Trashcan Hill. With the recent slightly cooler temperatures, the 30mph mark has suddenly become a much more common occurrence. On this night, the 30mph mark was equaled or surpassed five times. The loop of pain was uneventful as the bunch navigated the tree lined roads overlooking the lake. The speed went up over Cowpattie but there were no attacks and only some minor shadow boxing taking place. As the bunch turned south towards Dead Man’s Slough, the pace dropped significantly as the breeze was now a headwind and no one was exactly jumping at the chance to pull. After a few pedal strokes, gym shorts was willing and lead across the marsh all the way to Beaver Point. The peloton turned onto Dobbs and polished off their bidons preparing for the finish. Big Steamer sat on the front down Corinth Parkway, sunday spinning at a nice and easy 24mph as traffic dictated a pause at the Corinth Parkway stop. Shortly after the stop, Stearns put in a hard attack. His gap grew quickly drawing The Boss and Dewey Decimal out of the pack. The Boss got half way across the gap but was looking for help and Dewey Decimal obliged pulling Stearns back just 300 meters from the finish. The Boss got onto Stearns wheel just about the time the Redondo Crit winner folded up his tent and called it a night. The three escapees had given it a go but they were captured and spit out the back as the group freight trained past them. DC and White Walls wasted no time after the catch hitting the gas and crossing swords towards the tantalizing close money line. The splintering group is thundering towards the finish and DC is able to hold on for the win. The Cannibal closes quickly and grabs second with White Walls taking third. With the Hotter n’ Hell race taking place next weekend, the Big Steamer schedule will be as follows for the next two weeks: Tuesday, August 19th – Big Steamer Series Thursday, August 21st – Easy spin of 15 miles or less at slow speed. CCC get together at Pourhouse Grill. Tuesday, August 26th – Big Steamer recovery Thursday, August 28th – No club ride. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend and ride with the CCC. Good thing the group is making the Corinth Parkway stop as we do all the time. This intersection may have become some kind of a high crime area. I was bring up the rear and there were two law enforcement vehicles at that intersection. It keeps the cars in control and allows a good time to be had by all.
