Big Steamer August 12th - Critical Mass SAG WAGON NEWS
CORINTH-It was a beautiful night for a ride so it was no surprise when over 30 cyclists turned out for the Big Steamer on Tuesday evening. There were dark rain clouds over Lake Lewisville but with temperatures in the 80’s no one was complaining and the pace was muy rapido.
Corinth’s version of a Critical Mass ride pedaled down Corinth Parkway at 22mph as the Mexican Professor was in his customary position on the front. MP and The Cannibal tooks turns showing off their calves in Cielo Ranch as the peloton was bobbing and weaving more than Ali in his prime. As they exited the Ranch, MP shot off the front again and juiced the pace up to 25mph as he drove his tri bike up Trashcan Hill. Just after Garza curve, the Mexican Professor finally pulled off looking for some help. At first none was coming, but soon Big Steamer threw some coal on his boiler and set the pace at 25mph and he drove into a headwind and then over Cowpattie Hill. It was at this point that the goldfish started to appear in the back of the peloton. Dang it Dake lived up to his nickname as he drove through Brown Terrace and into Dinosaur Forest at a most uncomfortable pace. The pack reached the bottom of the Col on the rivet at 28mph.
The speed up the Col de Shady Shores was a leg searing 26mph as Dang it Dake, Ink, MP and others blitzed the climb. It was clear on this evening that there would be no soft pedaling. Over the top and Ink continued to ride as he kept the pace high up Cowpattie Hill driving into the north breeze. The pace caused a slight split in the group as “man overboard” became a common sight. Mexican Professor was looking for a breakaway opportunity the final time up the Col but it wasn’t happening as riders were stuck to his wheel like Border Patrol agents on the Rio Grande. Once they crested the climb, only 12 riders were left to con-*test*-('") the finish – Tornado Tom, Ink, Bianchi Ben, Dang it Dake, Big Steamer, The Boss, Cannibal, Scooter, DC, Mexican Professor and the the Lollipop Guild.
There was no decrease in the tempo as they made the last loop of pain. The speed was such that attacks were eliminated and it was clear the finish would come down to a sprint finish. As the group turned onto Corinth Parkway, they ran smack dab into a headwind for the first mile. The pulls were short and unorganized but the pace still remained around 22mph. MP took over in the softball fields and tried to give a lead out but no one was willing to go so early. The peloton got really angry with ¾ of a mile left and the pace was ratcheted up to 30mph. It was about this time that there was a twitch in the group which almost caused the Boss and Scooter to face plant. Their night was essentially over and the race was up the road now.
It was a true drag strip finish as the riders bore down on Gloryville. Ink had ridden strong all night but finally had enough with just 200 meters left. Big Steamer was still there with Dang it Dake running on all cylinders. DC is battling as well with The Cannibal nibbling. It is a photo finish at the line between Dang it Dake and Big Steamer with one slight problem…..there is no camera at the finish. We may never know who rode it like they stole it on this glorious night. DC held on for third place. Because the winner is unknown, Big Steamer and Dang it Dake are both awarded 2.5 points and DC takes 1 for third.

Love the write ups, but you gotta help me on this one :)

Hmmm... in my opinion there is something wrong with the points awarded tonight. If first place is 3, an second is 2 points... shouldn't it be 3+2=5 ... 5/2= 2.5 points each??? Or in the Olympic spirit... you could award two golds and a bronze! :D
Just a suggestion!

A reference to some very heavy breathing going on in the peleton.

Since the winner gets 3 points, I just made it easy and split the points. Big Steamer or Dang it Dake are both welcome to file an official pro-*test*-('") with the Kangaroo Court if they are so inclined.

Well... kangaroo court or not, if this was me "splitting the points" I would file an official pro-*test*-('"). On behalf of my fellow cyclists, I don't think it's fair to come in first... or second... and get less points than if I had come in second by myself! In my opinion this is not right. If they can't decide who is first and who is second, they shouldn't be punished by receiving fewer points. In cycling races, that's why the peloton gets the same time as the sprinting winner (the sprinter isn't punished), and in the Olympics, if there's a tie, two people get the same higher placing medal.

I think they should just flip a coin if it is too close to call...

Geez...I didn't know this would turn into such a big deal. If I give them both 2 1/2 points, someone will complain that the second place person (whomever it was) received more than the normal 2 points. I never thought I would see the Big Steamer ride compared to the Olympics.....
In the future I suggest that if it looks like you are going to be involved in a photo finish, you either speed up or slow down.
:)
Pedal on....
Francisco- 08-13-2008
Well, if that's the case then they should both get 2 points (which I still feel is wrong, but at least more fair). Sorry for being so insistent, but I just think it's wrong for two people that tied for FIRST place to get less points than a normal second place finish. So they should either get 3, 2.5, or 2 points each, whatever the kangaroo court decides. Think about it, if they had flipped a coin or not displayed such good sportsmanship and argued over who was first, they would've both been better off! This is plain economics (i.e., prisonner's dilemma) and a non Pareto-optimum has been reached. The 1.5 point solution makes sense if they had tied for SECOND (no one would have gotten half a point, right?).
I rest my case here... but maybe Kevin and not the kangaroo court can help us sort this one out.

Let's put it to a vote. I created a new Big Steamer Poll in the forum. I'll leave the poll open for a day and will go with whatever the majority says.

The ride last night was freaking great! Moving from Chicago, I'm still adjusting to the Texas heat. I would have been smiling if I finished at the back of the pack. When the temp goes down a bit like last night the speed goes up. Big thanks to MP and Cannibal for doing their usual inordinant amount of pulling. Ink was also a welcome engine. I also want to give another BIG THANK YOU to Scottie for doing the BS write ups! I look forward to reading them every Wed and Fri morning. It definitely adds something to the rides.
I don't have any points pro-*test*-('"). My suggestion would be to decide on how ties will be handled and stick to it. That way the next time it happens we will all know what to expect. I do like that we are all competitive and scratching for points. If it wasn't competetive I bet you wouldn't get 30+ people showing up. I should have started my break earlier, but Scooter about gave me a heart attack. Thanks to all for a fun and fast ride. Looking forward to Hotter N Hell.

For those wondering, Ink's real name is Toby Smith, a Cat 3 with GZ Tenzing.
Tornado and I were joking last night that we need to start having some embedded reporters in the peloton because the group has gotten so large.
DallasBikr- 08-13-2008
Kevin? Surely you aren't asking for my help here...since I wasn't even there :)
I defer to the Boss/CCC poll/whatever.
But I'd like half a point so I can draft the Panda please...
scooter- 08-13-2008
dake's opinion I do echo Dangitdake's sentiments concerning Scottie's write ups. I cant hardly wait for Wed and Fri. morning's. Keep em coming Scottie.
And sorry DID for causing the heart failure, rest in peace bro, you werent the only one, there were at least 2 others. I wondered who that was that I moved out into the fast lane....sorry.

No offense to anyone...especially since I'm never around the peleton at the end of the race but I concur with the current points award. At the conclusion of the race six (6) points in all to be awarded; no more no less. In the event of a tie (like Thursday night's race) the points should be allocated appropriately but not to exceed a total of 6 points distribution. Futball/Soccer, especially the professionals (EPL, MLS), Worldcup and Olympics use a point system...3 pt. for a win and 1pt. for a tie.
Of course, come the day that I finish with the group and heaven rejoice I ever place...I'd want all the freak'n points I can get!!! If you listen closely during the beginning of each Big Steamer ride...usually just before we hit Cielo Ranch...between gasps for air, and the road starts to spin...I'm constantly begging Scottie and petitioning for a point...just one...here or there.
