Big Steamer April 29th - Muy Bueno Mexican Professor Sag Wagon News

CORINTH - As every afternoon so far this year, our good friend Aeolus (aka. Mr. Wind) paid a visit to the Big Steamer ride. 17 riders came out to pay tribute to Aeolus by challenging his usual power by irreverently pedaling into it. But of course, what goes around comes around... so for some moments Aeolus seemed kind.
The group remained together well into the ride. On Dead Men's slough, a slow "haulin" oversized pickup full of almost falling junk was the first of many obstacles all of us had to avoid. The Mexican Professor, fearing for his life, decided to overtake the obstacle forcing the group to split. Sir Roy charged into the lead and pulled the front riders into Cielo Ranch. After being asked to slow down, the lead group caught up with the rest of the peloton that had taken a "regrouping" route inside Cielo Ranch. On Shady Shores the peloton picked up the pace and the first riders started to drop. Roy and MP shared the lead until the Big Steamer, the Cannibal, DC, and Deuce (aka. BB, which stands both for Blue Bonnet and Blazing Bullet) took charge. The pace was never that fast as Aeolus was reminding the riders who really rules the Big Steamer Series.
Right at the end of Garza road, just as the peloton turned right, the dreaded sound of air exploding was heard. Sir Roy showed great bike handling skills as he was able to keep his machine upright as his front tube disintegrated at 30mph. Tough luck as he was riding strong. Soon after, Ricky Bobby made his first... and last appearance of the day in front of the group. He is definitely paying the price of those sleepless nights, but everyone rest assured that he'll be back stronger than ever as soon as he completely recovers from pregnancy.
The group remained tight throughout the two loops and climbs up the Col de Shady Shores. On both climbs, Dewey Decimal reminded the peloton of his natural abilities to climb and how good of a wheel he will be next Saturday (watch out Mt. Scott!!!). Everything was feeling breezy up to that point, until we were all reminded that Aeolus, was still there. As the peloton turned left onto Garza Road the pace started to drop, as well as some more riders.
The last big loop was simply a battle for survival. MP kept trying to break up the group by picking up the pace into the wind, but each and every single one of his attempts were in vane. Nine riders (DC, Gentle Ben, Boss, Cannibal, MP, Big Steamer, Hollywood, Dewey Decimal, Deuce) remained as they headed back into the wind down Shady Shores Road. Dewey Decimal attacked at the top of Dead Man’s Slough but the peloton was having none of it.
Duece hit the front down Dobbs Lane and the Yellow train turned right onto Corinth Parkway as the speed was now 32 mph and it was go time.
As the group turned onto the last straightaway, Deuce was in command and the lead pack had been reduced to five. Deuce started to open a gap and did all the work during that last mile... but he paid the price. With 400 yards remaining, thanks to alternating efforts between Hollywood, Big Steamer, and the Cannibal the group rejoined. However, as soon as they made contact with Deuce the pace drastically dropped. The sprinters were getting ready for the final sprint. They did not realize, though, that MP, who had uncharacteristically held back for the last couple of minutes, was taking off with over 300 yards to go. His previous attacks had tired the sprinters' big and powerful legs enough, and he was able to hold on for his first official Big Steamer win. Deuce hangs on for second and Hollywood nips The Cannibal for 3rd.

Good write up. That slow moving truck was a danger for the entire group, but lead rider needs to remember that there are many others that will be following. With the rebar sticking out of those panels it was a scary load. Heading out into oncoming traffic was just as bad. I think as a group we should have backed off until there was a point where all could get by.
This was my first time out this season and the pace has really picked up. Thanks to Tim and Jack for pulling me along. I'm learning how important it is to not lose contact.

Aeolus .....and I learned many years ago to let aeolus alone, so I enjoyed my OTB tacos, chips/hot sauce/queso and ice cold cervaza.....hmmmmhmmmgood! and also the inspiring write up. However, as a side note, I would enjoy it more if my name was not at the bottom of the points list. :( Could someone at least put me closer to the top of the 1 point holder? Let somebody else be last for a while... :D See ya Thursday!
