Big Steamer April 24th - DC Capitalizes SAG WAGON NEWS -
CORINTH - The wind was howling and the skies cloudy, but 17 riders showed up for the Thursday evening Big Steamer ride. The peloton was still smarting from Tuesdays ride as they pedaled through the neutral zone and over I-35 into the Killing Fields.
It didn’t take long for the twitchy peloton to kick it old school. The Cannibal hit the front as the Yellow Train entered Dead Men’s Slough and the speed was 30mph across the lake. As they turned into the Cielo Ranch, Ricky Bobby yelled out “Dear Lord baby Jesus make me fast” and took off. The group was slow to react, but Ricky Bobby is still recovering from sleep deprivation brought on by the recent birth of his new son and was just looking for some television time at the front anyway.
The group twisted and turned through the ranch and hit Shady Shores road. Big Steamer was on the front now driving up Trash Can Hill. Dewey Decimal moved around Big Rick and upped the ante towards Cowpattie Hill. Over the top, Thrasher makes his first appearance of the night at the front and steadies the pace to 32 mph as the peloton dove onto Brown Terrace Road. They hit the bottom of the Col de Shady Shores and the group was still wound tighter than a $2.00 watch. Over the summit and they turn right and the Boss goes to the front and the pace is at 32mph once more. The increase in pace ejects a handful of combatants off the back.
The second time up the Col and the pace is much higher now. Scooter and The Wrench are on the front at the bottom but soon Hollywood is looking for some television time for his sponsors and hits the front. Over the top and the group is now reduced to 10.
The group of 10 enters the Loop of Pain and turns south onto Garza Lane and directly into a 20mph headwind. The speed is at 12mph as no one is willing to stick their nose into the wind and work on Cowpattie Hill. Hollywood finally jumps and gets a gap of 20 or so yards. Scooter yells out that there is no way Hollywood can hold the gap alone into the head wind and no one reacts. Hollywood sits out in front for awhile but his presence out front is like a drug to a junkie and sooner or later someone is going to give in. Big Steamer is the first to fall off the wagon and he quickly rejoins Hollywood which causes a chain reaction. One by one riders have a go and everyone is back together.
They descend into Dead Man’s Slough and Big Steamer is on the front powering through the headwind. As they approach Beaver Point, Hollywood attacks. Hollywood hits the bottom of Shady Mound with a pair of riders on his wheel but the the leash is on tight and they are quickly gobbled up. The group turns right onto Dobbs road and DC shows everyone a clean pair of wheels as he rockets off the front.
The peloton watches DC continue to ride away into the sunset and yet no one reacts. 50, 100 and 150 meters the gap continues to grow. The Yellow Train turns onto Corinth Parkway and they have just under two miles to try and bring DC back. The Cannibal and The Boss urge the group to ride and the speed suddenly increases to 31 mph. DC was biting his bars now but he was holding off the stampeding herd. One by one the peloton begins to crack. The Big Steamer drops his chain and his chances for points go bye bye.
Dang It Dake makes his first appearance on the front and ups the speed to a lung busting 32 mph. Hollywood goes with him and The Cannibal tries to do the same. One mile to the finish now and The Boss comes around Cannibal struggling to rejoin Hollywood and Dang it Dake. 500 meters to the finish and DC is in the pain cubicle and his inbox is full. His lead is shrinking but the finish line is tantalizing close. Dang It Dake puts some space on Hollywood and begins to reel DC back in. He isn’t able to finish the job though and DC holds on for a spectacular win and the bonus points. Dang it Dake rolls across in second.
The Boss is continuing to dig into his courage suitcase and is turning himself inside out. Hollywood looks back as they lunge for the line. The Boss nips Hollywood by inches for third pace. A terrific finish to a great night of racing CCC style.

Tue/Thur write-ups Scottie, cant tell you how much I enjoy your write ups. They always keep my attention longer than anything I ever do. (Not bad for a person who has A.D. D. huh?) Very, very well written. Thanks.

Sounds like everyone had a windy ride, nice avg speed though with those winds. As usual, nice write up!
