Big Steamer April 15th - It Was Bound To Happen SAG WAGON NEWS
CORINTH - For the first time in the history of the Big Steamer Series, a breakaway was able to stick. If ever there was a night that it would happen, it was Tuesday night. Winds were howling from the southeast at 20 mph and gusting to 25+ which made for some tactical riding for the 13 riders that braved the conditions.
The peloton was altogether as they approached Cowpattie Hill for the first time. The Mexican Professor snuck off the front and Ricky Bobby took off with him. The pace was steadily increasing now…. 25, 26, 27mph and higher and higher. Up the Col de Shady Shores they labored and the pack was bunched in tight. After cresting the Col the group turned right towards Cowpattie Hill and Duece attacked. He quickly had a gap with Mexican Professor planted on his wheel like cheese on enchiladas. The gap continued to hold as they headed through Dinosaur Forest and back into the wind. The peloton realized that it was now or never and the break had a chance to stick. The Boss was the first to go and crossed the gap to rejoin the front with DC and Big Rick also making the junction.
The group of four climbed the Col together and were hugging wheels over the top. They entered the loop of pain with MP leading the way, Boss on his wheel, Big Rick behind and Duece keeping an eagle eye on the pack. The Yellow train turned south onto Garza road and smack dab into a 20mph headwind. As they crested Cowpattie Hill together, MP began rambling about how bad his legs were feeling. About 50 yards after the Hill, MP hit the gas and gaped the group. No one was willing to follow and he was quickly 30 yards off the front. The group flew around the bend at 28mph as the gap held steady. They turned right onto Shady Shores road and descended into Dead Men’s Slough.
Deuce attacked here and was able to get back on the Mexican Professor’s wheel. Big Rick was still on Deuce’s wheel at this point and trying to hold. The Boss was all over his machine and gave everything to close the gap and get back onto Big Rick’s wheel. His effort was rewarded as he brought Big Rick back but it was short lived. By now, the Mexican Professor and Deuce had ridden away from the defending champ and Big Rick and the Boss were in no mans land. The two amigos were away and they weren’t coming back.
DC continued to ride hard and was finally able to rejoin the champ and Boss about ½ mile to the finish. Meanwhile, Deuce was polishing off the Mexican Professor for his first ever Big Steamer victory. Boss started his sprint 200 yards from the finish but wasn’t able to hold off Big Rick for third place and BR nipped him at the line in front of the cheering spectators.
Sag Wagon news caught up with The Wrench after the ride. “It sure was a tough ride,” said Wrench. “You know it’s tough when you set a PR and still get dropped”. Indeed it is Wrench, indeed it is.
